CHILD FIND Project CHILD FIND seeks to locate young children, ages 3 to 5 years old, who might have physical, neurological, speech / language or medical needs or developmental delays of varying degrees of severity. Parents of any child about whom parents have a concern that the child might be a child with a disability are encouraged to contact the Office of Special Education to discuss their concerns of their child. Special education law provides for students between the ages of 3 to 21, and, while not the direct responsibility of the school district, referrals can be made for students below the age of 3, and above the age of 21. Individual Educational Programs (IEP's) are formulated if a child is determined to be educationally disabled. A parent, the teacher and a Child Study Team member meet jointly for the annual revision of the instructional program. A Case Manager is assigned to follow each child's progress and to insure academic success through the IEP. Some students experience attention / attending problems which may respond to medication. Parents are encouraged to consult with their health care professional concerning these issues. Medication and attention attending problems are not, in themselves, reasons for referral or classification. Every attempt is made to address the learning needs of the student prior to any referral to the Child Study Team. Students who have been classified as eligible for special education may be placed in any of the above programs. Most students receive resource center services, and are maintained in the mainstream with their peers. In the rare instance that students are in need of more services than currently available in South River Public Schools, the Child Study Team will recommend a more restrictive, or out of district, placement. These placements are rare and only considered when all other options have been exhausted. Children experiencing speech difficulties may be classified as "Eligible for speech-language services" by one of the district's Speech Therapists. These children receive only speech correction in a small group setting, and are not classified by the entire Child Study Team. Parental written informed consent is required prior to any speech evaluation or placement in a speech correction program. Teachers or parents may refer students for screening by the speech therapist prior to parental consent for evaluation. Children qualifying for this classification must meet State dictated guidelines for eligibility. Students with disabilities may receive related services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, transportation services (handicapping condition must be such that transportation is indicated), or counseling services.
