Dear Parents,

At South River, our mission is to promote strong academics, outstanding student discipline, and to encourage excellent home and school communication. The outstanding reputation of our school system continues to attract families seeking an excellent education for their children. The South River Elementary School serves a community of 620 students of diverse cultural backgrounds which includes a full day kindergarten and grades third through fifth housed in a modern facility.

Our students are enriched with a variety of programs to provide a well-rounded education such as Vocal Music, Art, Library, Physical Education, Computer Lab, Spanish, Guidance, Instrumental Music, and a Gifted and Talented program. The science specialist enhances the district’s science curriculum with hands on instruction. Our special education program consists of 2 self-contained classes and an extensive inclusion model. Pull out resource room assistance is offered as well. We also operate a full-day verbal behavior program, one half-day integrated program, and two half-day general education preschool classes.  In addition, the elementary school offers programs for speech, English as a Second Language, and Bilingual Education in Spanish.

Our district remains on the cutting edge in terms of curriculum. The full implementation of Singapore Math in the elementary school has resulted in an increase student achievement. Districts from several states send observers to our school to view this program in action.

The elementary school boasts an extensive infusion of technology. In addition to the modern computer lab, all classrooms are provided with computers with online access connected to large television monitors. Mathematics and language arts instruction is supplemented with the use of software programs such as Fast ForWord and Study Island. Most classroom teachers enjoy daily access to classroom-mounted Smart Boards and LCD projectors. The usage of laptop computers and the conversion of the facility into a wireless environment enhance student and staff access to the network and the Internet. Our media center houses a large collection of books, computers, videotapes, journals and magazines. Through ParentConnect, our students’ parents and guardians can access their children’s grades online.

The fifth grade students receive D.A.R.E. training from our local police department. The third grade observes Government Day by participating in a walk through town, stopping at various township offices and sites of interest where they learn about township agencies and the rich history of South River. The entire school participates in enjoyable activities throughout the school year such as Spirit Days, Read Across America Day, Halloween parades, assemblies, family science night, instrumental band and choral concerts. The talents of our students are showcased in a drama club production.

We enjoy a wonderful relationship with the PTA and the community as they provide immense support for the school’s programs through enthusiastic volunteerism and ongoing fundraising efforts. Our parent community is attentive and responsive to the needs of their children as they demonstrate a great interest by attending activities such as Back to School Night, parent-teacher conferences, parades, Education Week Classroom Visitations, Family Science Night, Family Literacy Activities, Singapore Math Information sessions, and student performances
Sincerely,
Wayne Sherman
