Chartwells School Dining Services
We are extremely pleased to announce that the South
River School District is implementing the Comalex (www.comalex.com)
computerized point of sale system (POS) in the
cafeteria.
What does this mean?
In addition to the present availability of pre-payment for Type-A meals, as well
as paying cash daily, students will have the added benefit of placing money on
account, which may be used for lunch and a la carte purchases. The student's pin
number and ID card will serve as a debit card, drawing money against their
account to pay for anything they wish to purchase in the cafeteria. Purchase
of pre-paid Type-A meals will remain available, as will the acceptance of
cash at all registers.
Money on account can be used only for food purchases in the cafeteria. Please
send in initial deposits and instruct your child to bring the deposit to
the cafeteria cashier. The amount and frequency of your deposits is at your own
discretion. We
accept cash or money orders/personal checks made payable to South River Board of
Ed.-Cafeteria Account." Please indicate student's name and grade on checks.
Though it is preferred that students utilize the debit system, cash will still
be accepted at all registers. There are, however, many benefits to having money
on account. If a student forgets to bring money with them to school, they will
not have to borrow or go without lunch. Also, the reduced amount of cash
handling at the registers makes the lines move quicker and gives students more
time to eat. Parents will also benefit by knowing that the money intended to pay
for lunch really did pay for lunch.
What effect will this have on students in the Free and Reduced Lunch
Program?
Free and Reduced status will become more confidential, because the
roster system will be eliminated. The meal status will be maintained within the
computerized register system, and your student will be charged the price
associated with their meal status (none if Free) when rung up by the cashier.
This status will remain confidential, and will not be evident to other students
in line. This is because they will not know if a particular student did not pay
at the register because they are designated Free, or if they have money on
account, from which the meal was paid.
Will students have access to each others accounts....will they be secure?
No, and absolutely yes respectively. A photo will be attached to his
or her account, so in the event of a lost or stolen Student ID Card, their
picture will prevent anyone else from accessing his or her account.
How will my student, who typically pays cash benefit from having money on
account?
Two ways. Individually, your student will benefit from not having to either
borrow or go without lunch, if they were to forget to bring money with them.
Collectively, every student will benefit from the reduced amount of cash
handling at the registers. Without having to make change for every student, the
cashiers will be able to process the lines much more quickly. Parents/guardians
will also benefit from this system, by being certain that the money you intended
to go toward lunch went to pay for a meal.
