Qualifications for the Program

In order to qualify for the Gifted & Talented Program, a student must meet the following criteria:

INITIAL CRITERIA:

In order to qualify for the Gifted & Talented Program Grades 3 through High School, a student must meet the all of following criteria:

I. Standardized testing:

A. A percentile of 93 percentile on the TOTAL BATTERY of the most recently administered Terra Nova. (1st grade - 90 percentile, 2nd grade - 92 percentile)

or

B. A percentile of 93 percentile in any two total scores (Reading, Writing, Math portions), on the most recently administered Terra Nova. (1st grade - 90 percentile; 2nd grade - 92 percentile)

or

C. A ranking of Advanced Proficient in two areas of the NJ ASK / GEPA

II. The teacher shall submit a completed "Teacher Nomination Form".

III. At the Elementary and Middle schools, the student's academic (classroom) achievement should be in the "A - B" range; no grade lower than a "B" in any major academic subject. No grade in any other course shall be lower than a "C".

At the High School level, the grade point average should not be lower than 3.5 GPA.

IV. The student must maintain regular school attendance.

Exceptions:

For students who do not speak English as their native language, the standardized test criteria above may be waived, if all other criteria are met. Close consultation with the ESL and classroom teachers and their strong recommendation must be considered prior to placement in the Gifted & Talented program.

For 8th grade students taking the Grade Eight Proficiency Assessment (GEPA), the student must score in the top 25% of the top (third) band for consideration into the program.

Exit criteria:

Students will be exited from the Gifted & Talented Program if any of the following occur:

1. Academic / classroom work drops below a B in any major academic subject, or the High School GPA falls below a 3.5. No grade in any other subject shall be lower than a "C" average for the previous two marking periods. For students taking "Eighth Grade Accelerated Math" at the Middle School, a "C" average will not be considered as grounds for removal from the program.

This achievement will be monitored at the end of each semester by the teacher of the Gifted & Talented in order for the student to continue into the following semester. The student will be place on "G&T Probation" and allowed to remain in the program for one semester. If no academic improvement is noted, the student will be exited from the program.

2. Regular school or class attendance drops below acceptable levels.

3. Parent or student request.

4. Behavior problems of a chronic nature. Principal's recommendation is needed for removal from the program on these grounds.

Readmittance to Gifted & Talented Program after removal:

Students will be readmitted to the Gifted & Talented  program, after removal for low grades, if ALL of the following occur

1. Academic / classroom work is maintained at a B in all major academic subjects, or the High School, the GPA again meets a 3.5. No grade in any other subject shall be lower than a "C". This achievement will be monitored at the end of each semester by the teacher of the Gifted & Talented in order to review students who might again become eligible.

2. Regular attendance is maintained, and there are no more than 8 unexcused days absent per year.

3. Behavior problems are eliminated. Principal's recommendation is needed for readmittance to the program on these grounds.

Caveat on Removal from the program on academic grounds:

1. Students whose grades fall far below acceptable levels (i.e. any D's or F's in any subject), or students with more than 1 incomplete in any subject, shall be requested to take a leave of the program for the semester immediately. Due to the very critical nature of these severely low grades, students may be asked to take a leave of the program without probation, if failures and incompletes are noted. Students will be readmitted the following semester, if all the above criteria are met.

*** It is not required to have students again meet the criteria of the standardized testing, as they had qualified previously, and been accepted into the program. The daily, academic work is, however, the primary force in continuing in the program.
