Seal of Biliteracy

The Seal of Biliteracy  provides recognition to high school seniors who are able to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English. The Seal of Biliteracy includes a certificate prepared by the NJ Department of Education and an appropriate insignia affixed to the student’s high school transcript. This Seal provides evidence of linguistic skills that are attractive to potential employers and college admission offices.

How will it benefit students?

  • Provides nationally accredited means of demonstrating language skills to universities for the purpose of receiving academic credit

  • Provides nationally accredited proof of language and biliteracy skills to potential employers

  • Encourages study of languages, and the development of 21st century skills and global competence

Recognition Eligibility

  • Demonstrate proficiency in ELA successfully completing their graduation course and testing requirements in English (NJSLA, ACCESS or other NJ DOE approved assessment).  English Language Learners (ELLs) must have met the ACCESS 2.0 proficiency requirements by their junior year.

  • Achieve an Intermediate-High (I - 3) rating in four components (Interpretive Listening, Interpretive Reading, Interpersonal Listening and Speaking, Presentational Writing) of the ACTFL Assessment of Performance towards Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL)

  • Successfully complete all graduation requirements in all content areas.

Required Actions

  • Interested students must complete the Google Form to participate in the AAPPL assessment for the Seal by January 12, 2024.

 Important Dates

  • January 17, 2024: Deadline to register for Seal of Biliteracy Assessment

  • Week of January 22, 2024:  Testing administration window
