Student Teaching/ Observation

Student Teaching text

Student teaching and observations

South River Public School district is pleased to cooperate with many area colleges and universities in classroom observation and student teaching/internship programs. We feel that these preparatory experiences are extremely important in the "real world" development of future education professionals. With this belief as a foundation, the following steps/procedures have been established so that the college students and cooperating South River teachers can provide the best developmental experience possible.

Procedures for Placement

Each applicant’s qualifications and requirements are examined. Student teachers, interns and observations are placed according to the number of cooperating teachers available in requested content areas. Placements are limited and the district may not be able to accommodate all students who request placement in South River.  Please do not contact building administrators or staff members regarding a placement without first contacting the Office of Human Resources

Requirements for Student Teaching/Clinical Practicum

  • The requesting University or college must contact the Office of Human Resources to request placement in writing
  • Specifics regarding the requested placement/grade/subject/experience must be outlined in the contact along with the requested time frame
  • Special requests from the University or College must be included in the initial request so they may be considered prior to any agreement
  • Student teachers/practicum must submit a physical exam completed by a physician
  • Negative results of the student’s Mantoux Test (taken within the last six months) must be submitted
  • A copy of the University or College Student Identification Card must be submitted
  • A Criminal History check must be completed prior to beginning student teaching
  • The student MUST submit proof of COVID vaccination prior to beginning any student teaching/ practicum
  • Student Teachers must also possess and submit a copy of their valid NJ Substitute Teaching certificate

Classroom Observation Procedures

Since classroom observations involve minimal contact, certain requirements are different for these students.

  • The student requesting a placement must contact the Office of Human Resources in writing OR the University or college may do so on behalf of the student in writing
  • Specifics regarding the requested placement/grade/subject/experience must be outlined in the contact along with the requested time frame
  • University or College students must submit negative results of a Mantoux test (taken within the last six months) at the time of the request.
  • A copy of the University or College Student Identification Card must be submitted
  • The student MUST submit proof of COVID vaccination prior to beginning any observation.

After your documentation has been submitted:

  • A request for placement will be sent to district staff to determine if South River will be able to accommodate your request
  • If a placement is possible, either the cooperating teacher or the Office of Human Resources will reach out to the Student Teacher/ Observer to set up the times and dates for the observations
  • Once you are provided a placement, sign in and out at the school’s office
  • You are required to wear visitor badge the entire time of observation

We look forward to supporting you as you begin your career in education!
